The sixth edition of this book is a great book for anyone taking Plant taxonomy at an upper division college level. It goes over basic plant morphology, and an overview of plant evolution. It covers numerous plant families and devotes two pages to most, the larger such as Asteraceae has 12 pages with floral formulas. This book has gone through several editions with different authors, the sixth edition has cleared up much of the disorganization from previous edition, but there are still a number of mistakes in the index, directing you to the wrong page. Do not get earlier editions as they do not have current classifications although this edition does need updating. I wish I had this book when I had taken plant taxonomy. This is a not a field guide and is not for those just learning botany. Once again, do not buy earlier editions unless very cheap.
Poor quality paper and binding, it's well written but VERY poorly organized. I'm glad I have it as a reference but I wish that a better text would have been required for the class.
The book came a bit torn up, parts of it are falling out. The pages are perforated inside so they just come loose. Has amazing content, I learned so much using this book in class. it goes very in depth into plant anatomy and how the various families differ. Worth dealing with the pages falling everywhere.

Seriously. It's so scattered and without order. Further, if you remove the rudimentary "keys" after the first chapter you'd be left with 40 pages.The book is a waste of space. Do not buy this, and let your instructors know the world feels it's s***.
Is the difference between the 5th Edition and the 6th worth the $100 the 6th Edition costs vs. the $6 for a used copy of the 5th Edition? I needed the 6th Edition for a class but bought a copy of the 5th Edition instead. Comparing it to a library copy of the newer edition I'd say there are maybe a total of 5-7 pages worth of new text, and a total of 4 new exercise questions in the entire text. So if you need this for a class but have access to a copy you can borrow of the current edition, save you $$$ and get the older edition. You can easily read or make photo copies (I think a few pages out of a several hundred page text would be considered "fair use") of the pages that have been added to the newest edition.
